LESSONS LEARNED -- THE HARD WAY
About a week after Alison received the news that she had not passed the REG Exam section, Roger CPA Review launched its new SmartPath Predictive Technology platform. Alison immediately pulled up her SmartPath data to see how she had performed in relation to students who had passed REG.
“I was in the red on almost all [course sections]. It just was this eye-opening experience that I really was not where I needed to be to sit and take that Exam.”
How SmartPath Predictive Technology helped
ALISON’S SMARTPATH DATA
Figure 1. Here is a snapshot from Alison’s SmartPath data right before she took REG the first time. The arrows point to examples of SmartPath targets that equate to success. One can easily see that across the board Alison was in need of attempting more questions, and to achieve higher scores. Seeing this data after she found out she didn’t pass was “eye opening” for Alison.
Figure 2. In contrast, here is a snapshot from Alison’s SmartPath data before she took REG a second time. She surpassed all of her targets on every REG section except for REG 1: Individual Taxations and REG 2: Corporate Tax. Because she had scored very well on these areas during her first attempt, she lessened her focus on them the second time around.
Figure 3. Overall the data shows that there was a huge difference in Alison’s progress and performance from her first to her second attempt. She truly took the SmartPath targets to heart, and put in the hard work that was needed.
Using SmartPath for the remainder of her CPA Exam journey
A FRESH APPROACH TO STUDYING
The data provided by SmartPath showed Alison that she had not put enough emphasis on the practice multiple choice questions (MCQs) and task-based simulations (TBSs) in her Interactive Practice Questions (IPQ) software. With this newfound knowledge she decided to modify her study approach based on her SmartPath data.
Before using SmartPath, Alison would watch all course lectures first and then attempt questions in the software. Now she focused her study time on working her MCQs and TBSs, helping her to be more targeted and efficient with her study tactics.
“From that point on, I changed the way I was studying. I was constantly using SmartPath™ to track how I was doing in each of those sections where I had not yet met the targets. Then, once I had hit the target on every single one of them, I took it again.”
A DIFFERENT EXAM EXPERIENCE
When comparing her first attempt of the REG Exam to the second, Alison reported that she had completely different experiences.
“I think I underappreciated how difficult it was going to be the first time. I didn't feel terrible going into it. But looking back, the whole week before I took the exam, I did nothing but go through the IPQ, and I wasn't scoring very well. At the time, I was just like, ‘Well, it's going to be fine.’ But when I was in the exam, I realized within the first thirty minutes that it was going very poorly. I knew walking out that there was a very slim chance that I had passed.
Going into the second exam, I felt much more confident, and I knew that I knew the materials very well. When I left, I felt like I had passed.”
Alison passed the REG section of the Exam with a 77 this time!
MOVING FORWARD FASTER
After finding success on the REG Exam with a refreshed study method, Alison feels armed and ready to take on the rest of the CPA Exam, and to do it more proficiently.
“SmartPath™ made a huge difference in my study efficiency. I was just able to focus in on the right areas and focus in on questions. The plan now is with the remainder of the [exam parts], I think I should be able to move a lot faster.”
