Pennsylvania CPA Requirements

Education Requirements

Credit Requirements: 150 semester units (225 quarter units) may reduce experience requirement for licensure, but are not needed to sit for the exam.

Minimum Degree: Baccalaureate with 150 semester units or Graduate degree

Additional Requirements: 24 semester hours or equivalent quarter hours in accounting, auditing, business law, finance or tax subjects of a content satisfactory to the Pennsylvania Board. An additional 12 credit hours related to accounting, audit, or tax of a content satisfactory to the board

Residency Requirements

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is not required

Minimum Age: 18

Additional Requirements: It is not necessary to be a resident, employee, or keep office(s) in the state

Social Security Requirement: Yes

Educational Requirement: 150 hours including Bachelor's Degree 

Participates in International Exam Program: Yes

Experience Requirements: 1 year (1,600 hours) of experience in any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, compilation, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice. For those that passed 1 section of the exam prior to 12/31/11: B.A. Degree 2 years’ experience (as listed above). Master Degree or Postgraduate Degree - 1 year experience (as listed above). 400 hours must be related to audit activity in public or internal audit. Work must be supervised and verified by an active CPA
