As a current student or recent graduate with a degree in Accounting, you should always be looking for ways to stand out to recruiters. In the end, they are the ones that will be hiring you! In the Accounting field there are a number of networking events students can attend to meet professionals. If you have taken the appropriate avenues to network, then we can assume you have participated in Meet the Firms, which is a great place to meet several professionals in one place. You may feel like you really hit it off with recruiter and are confident you will get a position with the respective firm. However, many students overlook the fact that most recruiters are turning to social media in order to help with their decision making process. Access to your LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and every other social media platform you have, is just one click away.

We recently talked to two firm recruiters who both had some great tips for connecting with recruiters via social media. One of the recruiters is out of the Delap office in Lake Oswego, Oregon: Matthew Hilton. The other is Kelli Cline out of the Moss Adams office in Seattle, Washington. Below are their thoughts on the ways you can connect with recruiters through social media.

Social Media Accounts

Before you begin networking you will want to make sure all of your social media accounts are going to represent you in a positive light. Whether that be changing your profile to private on Facebook or adding accurate work information and a professional picture to your LinkedIn account. When asked about social media websites, Mrs. Cline said, We do encourage students to be mindful of the information and photos they choose to put on these sites, since some companies do check them. We are also connected to students via our firm-wide Facebook Careers page. Students are also starting to use LinkedIn more often and as a way to ask recruiters questions about the interview/application process (as opposed to sending an email). Cline went on to say, I would still encourage students to be cautious of the information they choose to share on any social media platform. Social media is a great resource to find out more information on any firm you are interested in working for.

Connecting with Recruiters on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is one of the most popular social media websites for Business professionals to connect. We asked Mr. Hilton how he approaches LinkedIn as a tool for recruiting prospective candidates and general networking. "I utilize LinkedIn on a daily basis and highly encourage all campus recruits to create an account." Hilton went on to say, "My advice to students looking to connect with recruiters or any professional contact for that matter on LinkedIn, is to challenge themselves to not just leave the default message when they send their invitation. It should be personalized and reference something from a previous conversation or a common interest that you both share. This could range from your alma mater, sports, favorite TV shows, restaurants, the list goes on and on." In case you were wondering, the generic invite message on LinkedIn states, I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn." With such a competitive marketplace you want to create a true connection with the professionals you meet and every opportunity to do so should have a genuine approach, not a default one.

We hope these tips will help students as they network with recruiters and make their mark in the accounting industry! If you have more tips on recruiting with professionals and recruiters, please share in the comments below.
