Have you heard? You no longer have to know a CPA to become a CPA!

As many CPA Exam candidates know, one of the requirements to become a CPA in many states is to have 1-2 years of accounting related work experience verified by a CPA. This is normally achieved by working either with an actual CPA during the experience, or reporting directly to a CPA. But that's about to change for some states.

The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) just announced that they will now be conducting a new service to help make the CPA credential more available to both domestic and international accounting professionals worldwide.

Recognizing that many applicants for licensure have difficulty finding a licensed CPA to sign off on their experience requirement, NASBA will now begin conducting Experience Verification services to Guam, Kentucky, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. Candidates that sat for the Exam in other states may be eligible to transfer scores to these jurisdictions.

The Experience Verification service is their latest effort to address the needs of both domestic and international licensure applicants by providing access to an interview with a licensed U.S. CPA, while also conducting a thorough authentication of the applicant’s work experience.

In order to begin the Experience Verification service, applicants must have:

  • Passed the CPA Examination,
  • Met the Board’s educational requirements for licensure, and
  • 1-2 years of accounting experience

The process is as follows:

  • A NASBA Client Manager will assess your particular situation and guide you through the application process.
  • Your work experience is verified by a local provider.
  • An interview with a U.S. CPA is conducted.
  • A comprehensive final report is prepared and submitted to the Board of Accountancy.

There is a fee associated with this service.

The fee for Experience Verification is $500 for domestic candidates and $700 for international candidates. NASBA encourages all who are interested in Experience Verification to fill out the form here where a Client Manager will contact you within 2-3 business days in order to discuss your eligibility.

You can learn more about this service by reading their Frequently Asked Questions here.
