CPA License

 Requirements

CPAs are licensed to practice by one (or more) of the 55 jurisdictions in the United States.  CPA Licensure requirements vary between states. Need additional units for licensure?  Earn masters level credit for CPA Review!

General requirements

Licensure Requirements
  • Completion of an approved ethics exam
  • Completing the minimum number of educational units (if not required before sitting for the exam)
  • Payment of a licensure fee
  • A minimum amount of experience under a licensed, active CPA
Work Experience Requirements
  • Often this experience can be completed before, during, or after your CPA Exam
  • Usually the minimum requirement is 1–2 years
  • Public accounting experience is accepted in all states; some states allow private or governmental accounting experience; hours needed varies.
  • Your employer must fill out and submit a form. See state requirements for more information.
